Bur-Del Early Childhood Educational Transition Program

The Bur-Del Early Childhood Educational Transition Program (BECET) was developed out of a vision to give indigenous children in the Burdekin community a better start to school, leading to improved educational outcomes and a brighter future. The program targets 3-5 year-olds and strives to enhance development and learning through a holistic, interventional approach, with the focus on being ‘ready to learn’ at school.

The program is delivered by qualified early childhood staff who value each child and their capacity to learn, providing one-on-one support in a positive and playful environment that promotes enjoyment of learning, confidence building and development of foundational skills.

Sessions operate at the Bur-Del Healthy Learning Centre during school terms, between 9.00-11.00 a.m. or 1.00-3.00 p.m. Monday to Thursday. Children attend once a week for 2 hours in small groups with up to 5 children. Transport is available between Brandon and Home Hill.

The aims of the program are to:

  • support development of foundational skills towards school readiness
  • identify barriers to learning using information provided through a comprehensive health check, hearing screen, vision check and developmental screen
  • refer children to allied health services when needed
  • assist families to access NDIS through Uniting Care ECA (Early Childhood Approach) when needed
  • support families to advocate for their children’s health and education
  • assist families to access services and to enrol in other ECEC programs and school
  • assist families and children with the transition to school process

The program is delivered at the Bur-Del Healthy Learning Centre, 110-112 Macmillan St, Ayr, Qld.

Opening hours are: 8.30 a.m. – 4.00 p.m. Monday – Friday during school terms.
